Early Life & Education
Kristoffer Kristofferson’s parents were Lars Henry Kristofferson and Mary Ann, and he succeeded them as a child on June 22, 1936 when he was born in Brownsville, Texas, United States. After retiring from the military as an Air Force Major General, he went on to become a member of the Saudi Arabian company ‘Aramco.
In Brownsville, Texas, he spent a significant amount of his early childhood. He was a graduate of San Mateo High School in California in 1954. Upon joining Pomona College in Claremont, he was able to win a short story contest conducted by Atlantic Monthly magazine. As a talented sportsman and scholar, he finished his B.A. in Literature. He obtained a B. Phil in English literature in 1960 at Oxford University’s Merton College after being awarded the ‘Rhodes Scholarship’.
Career
In the early 1960s, Kristofferson was assigned to West Germany by the army. He resigned from the Army in 1965 after being assigned as an English instructor at West Point military academy to pursue songwriting seriously. After moving to Nashville, he found it difficult to make ends meet. As a songwriter, he produced ‘Vietnam Blues’ for singer Dave Dudley. In 1966, the song reached the ‘Top 20’ position. Ray Stevens, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Price, and Sammi Smith recorded his songs in the 1970s, including ‘Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down’ and ‘Help Me Make It Through the Night’.
He made his debut as an actor in Dennis Hopper’s ‘The Last Movie’ in 1971. In Bill Norton’s movie ‘Cisco Pike’, he was cast in a starring role as a disillusioned musician who turned into a drug dealer. Following his third album ‘Border Lord,’ he released his fourth album called ‘Jesus Was a Capricorn’. The album’s success was made possible by its chart-busting single, ‘Why Me’.
