Early Life & Education
Born on December 14, 1951, Weston was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Born as Celia Watson, she opted to use the name Weston professionally instead; a British actress was already leveraging the name Celia Watson in her career.
She opted to change her last name from Watson to Weston following another actress with the same name. In 1966, she graduated from Spartanburg Day School in North Carolina. Driven by her passion for acting and supported by her mother, she managed to conquer stage fright, though she was wary about pursuing it further due to her father’s disapproval of her dedication.
Career
Returning to the US from her training in London in 1977, Celia studied with Uta Hagen, a German-American actress, and Herbert Berghof, an Australian-American actor. At 28 in 1979, she took a significant step with her Broadway debut in “Loose Ends”, where she played Maraya, alongside Kevin Kline. In 1980, another production took place where she played the role of Lucinda in “The Lady from Dubuque”. It wasn’t until 1995 that she made a comeback, appearing as Mrs Holly in “Garden District”, and then again in “Summer in Smoke” the following year.
The first film directed by Eston, released in 1981, was called ‘Honky Tonk Freeway’. In 1995, the movie titled “Dead Man Walking,” which she starred as Mary Beth Percy and for which she received a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award, was released. In the same year, she played Amelia in “Unstrung Heroes”, and in 1996, she appeared as Valerie Swaney in “Flirting with Disaster”.
She was also involved in other films including “Celebrity” (1998), “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (1999), “Snow Falling on Cedars” (1999), and “Ride with the Devil” (1999). In 2001, she starred in three films, one of which earned her another SAG Award nomination for Best Performance by an Ensemble in a Motion Picture. The film was named ‘In the Bedroom’, while the others were titled ‘K-PAX’ and ‘Hearts in Atlantis’.
Celia did not take a break from acting; in fact, from 2002 until 2020, she constantly appeared in films, from “Igby Goes Down” (2002), “Invasion” (2007), and “Hulk” (2008), , to the “Freak Show” (2017), and “The Secret Dare to Dream” (2020). In 1980, Celia made her debut on television, assuming the role of Gloria D’Angelo in “Ryan’s Hope”. From 1981 to 1985, she portrayed Jolene Hunnicut in “Alice,” appearing in 90 episodes—a role that left a lasting impression on viewers. She played various roles in episodes of other shows – in 1999 in “ER”, 2001 for “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”, 2004 “Frasier”, 2005 “Law & Order: Criminal Intent”, and 2008 for “Desperate Housewives”. Most of the spontaneous appearances she did were in top-rated shows, such as “Modern Family” (five episodes), “Memphis Beat” (16 episodes), “American Horror Story: Freak Show” (five), and in 2020 for “Hunters” (four episodes), and “Bless This Mess” (two).
