During the summer of 2000, Smurfit got married to advertising executive Douglas Baxter in Surrey, England. Their first child, daughter Evie Dorothy Baxter, was born in Dublin, Ireland on November 2, 2004. In May 2007, Ridley Belle Baxter became Ridley Belle Baxter’s second child. Flynn Alexander Baxter, the son of their third child, was born in November 2008. Smurfit and her husband filed for divorce in February 2015.

From 1998 to 1999, Smurfit was well-known for playing Orla O’Connell in the BBC TV series Ballykissangel. In 2003, she portrayed Nina in the movie Bulletproof Monk. Smurfit played the lead character of Detective Chief Inspector Roisin Connor in the ITV police procedural Trial & Retribution for six years starting in 2003. Baldi, a BBC Radio 4 series, saw her guest-starring as well. Smurfit made an appearance on Agatha Christie’s Marple television episode ‘The Mirror Cracked from Side to Side’ in 2011. Smurfit played the role of Lady Jayne Wetherby in the 2013 NBC television period drama Dracula with a co-star. She made her first appearance as Cruella de Vil as a guest on ABC’s Once Upon a Time in 2014 as well.
She was involved in Deadly Cuts playing Pippa in 2021 and Olivia Foyle in Bloodlands in 2022. She appeared as Maud O’Hara in Disney Plus’s ‘Rivals’, a spin-off of the Jilly Cooper novel of the same name, in 2024. The series was renewed for another season in December 2024.
