Early Life & Education

Rita Ora was born to Albanian parents on November 26, 1990, in Pristina, which was then the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (the present-day country of Kosovo). Vera Ora, her mother, is a psychiatrist, whereas her father, Besnik Sahatçiu, is a former economics student who previously ran a pub. The Albanian consul in Russia (then part of the Soviet Union), whom Osman Bajraktari was his maternal grandfather, was appointed. Film and theater director Besim Sahatçiu was Besim Sahatçiu’s paternal grandfather, the father of Rita Ora.

Elena Ora is the elder sister of Rita Ora, and Don Ora is her younger brother. Rita Sahatçiu; her surname, originally derived from the Turkish term saatçi meaning “watchmaker,” was later modified by her parents to Ora, meaning ‘time’ in Albanian, for easier pronunciation.

Because of political reasons, her family moved from Kosovo following persecution of Albanians that started with the collapse of Yugoslavia. In 1991, when her newborn was just a baby, they relocated to London, England.
