New Orleans, Louisiana, was the place of birth for Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon on March 22, 1976. She was raised by her parents—her father, John Witherspoon, served as a lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve and was also in private practice as an otolaryngologist until 2012, and her mother, Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Witherspoon, is a professor of nursing at Vanderbilt University with a PhD in pediatric nursing. John D. Witherspoon is a sibling of Witherspoon.

During her time at Harding Academy, Witherspoon participated in cheerleading and graduated from Harpeth Hall School in Nashville. Although she started out as an English literature major at Stanford University, she left before graduating to pursue an acting career. Although Witherspoon is predominantly English, she also holds Scottish and Welsh ancestry.
