Career

In 2008, when Liam Payne was 14 years old, he took part in the television show ‘The X Factor’ by auditioning. He excelled sufficiently to advance to the concluding round of the ‘Judges’ Houses’ competition. However, Simon Cowell, the judge, believed that Payne was not prepared for the challenges of a live show competition and suggested that he return for the next series. By the following year, X Factor bumped up the minimum age for applications to 16, thus leaving him out of the running. Nonetheless, he proceeded to hone his vocal skills concurrently.

In 2010, he resurfaced with The X Factor, auditions where he presented Julie London’s timeless track ‘Cry Me a River’. Simon and the audience erupted into a standing ovation for his outstanding performance. All four judges at the audition approved his selection. During the ‘Bootcamp’ phase, he performed ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out’ and received the endorsement of three judges. However, Simon believed this performance was one-dimensional, and upon Nicole Scherzinger’s suggestion, he was grouped with four other contestants to create a five-member band that qualified for the ‘Groups’ category.

The band subsequently assembled managed to reach the finale of the event. They could not secure a higher position than the third spot. ‘One Direction’ became the group’s recognized name. Following the performance, Simon’s Syco Entertainment signed One Direction. Up to this date, they have issued five albums. They were the first group to ever achieve having all five albums start at the top spot on the Billboard Hot 200 chart. Payne was one of the principal writers in One Direction. He had collaboratively penned most of the tracks from the band’s third and fourth studio albums alongside Louis Tomlinson. Following Malik’s departure from the band in 2015, he took over the vocal parts that Malik had previously sung. The song ‘The Night We Met’, co-written by him, was released by the Irish band ‘Hometown’ in 2015.

In October 2019, Payne announced that his LP1, his inaugural album, was slated to be released on December 6, 2019.
