His parents, Mark Fiennes and Jennifer Lash, respectively, were both photographers and novelists and painters. Growing up, he had five siblings, including renowned actors Ralph Fiennes and film director Martha Fiennes.
His mother, Jennifer Lash, was Irish and his father, Mark Fiennes, was English. Joseph Fiennes was raised in a household that adhered to Roman Catholicism.
