Early Life & Education

James Charles Stuart McGregor, one of Scotland’s most renowned actors, and Carol Diane Lawson, a deputy headmistress, born Ewan McGregor on March 31, 1971, in Perth, Scotland. He was raised in Crieff by his younger brother Colin, who was a former RAF pilot, and had a close-knit family that encouraged his artistic talents. His early passion for performance was fueled by his uncle, Denis Lawson (Star Wars), who was an actor.

McGregor was a student at Morrison’s Academy in Crieff, but departed at 16 to pursue acting and join the Perth Repertory Theatre. In 1992, he began his professional career after completing his drama studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, which was shaped by a blend of stage training and raw talent.
