Early Life & Education

Career

Roth was always fascinated by art, particularly film and radio, and claimed that Al Jolson was his initial musical idol. Roth started singing in his late teens, both alone and with the Red Ball Jets, a rock band that incorporated R&B-tinged elements. Mammoth, a Los Angeles band with Alex and Eddie Van Halen brothers, was introduced to him during these stints. Roth was invited by them to become the lead vocalist for their new band, Van Halen, in 1974. Their first album, ‘Van Halen’, was produced in 1978 and it quickly gained national attention and radio airplay.

The Rolling Stone described the album as a ‘continuous booze-and-babes party train’, according to David Fricke. Roth’s ‘wildman’ reputation was often attributed to him being instrumental in the band’s success. Roth created a supergroup with guitarist Steve Vai, bassist Billy Sheehan, and drummer Gregg Bissonette following his breakup with Van Halen in late 1985.

Roth’s first solo album, ‘Eat ‘Em and Smile’, was released in July 1986. The release of ‘Skyscraper’, a more experimental album featuring the hit single ‘Just Like Paradise’ in January 1988 resulted in a Billboard album chart peak of No. 6, with two million copies sold in the U.S. His memoir ‘Crazy From the Heat’ was on the New York Times’ best-seller list in 1997. In 2004, Roth played poker as a guest star on the TV series ‘The Sopranos’.

Roth played with the Boston Pops Orchestra at Boston’s annual ‘Pops Goes the Fourth’ celebration later that year. His song ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow Bar and Grill’ was released by him in October 2020, which was written with John 5 and previously recorded in honor of his late bandmate Eddie Van Halen. Roth announced his intention to stop performing in October 2021 after finishing his final residency at House of Blues Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay between December 2021 and January 2022.

Roth released a series of covers of Van Halen songs in the second half of 2022 after rumored to be retiring from performing and releasing five original singles.

Roth made his triumphant return to live concert on May 3, 2025, at the M3 Rock Festival in Columbia, Maryland to perform all Van Halen classics and deep cuts. He then announced a tour in the United States for the summer of 2025. Roth performed as a guest during Teddy Swim’s Coachella set on April 10, 2026, singing Jump with Swims.
