American record producer, A&R executive, record executive, and lawyer, Clive Jay Davis, was born on April 4, 1932. Five Grammy Awards have been given to him and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a non-performer in 2000. From 1967 until 1973, Davis held the position of president at Columbia Records. From 1974 to 2000, he served as the founder and president of Arista Records, before launching J Records. He occupied the roles of chair and CEO of the RCA Music Group, chair and CEO of J Records, and chair and CEO of BMG North America from 2002 until April 2008.

Biography

Clive Davis was raised by Jewish parents Herman and Florence in Brooklyn, New York City, in the year 1932. His childhood was spent in the Crown Heights neighborhood. Davis lived with his married sister in Queens after losing both of his parents in a two-year span as a teenager.

He attended New York University for his higher education, and graduated with a degree in political science in 1953. Davis was awarded a full scholarship to attend Harvard Law School where he graduated in 1956.

Personal Life

In 1956, he was married to Helen Cohen, but they separated in 1965.

Despite his divorce in the same year, he married Janet Adelberg and they were married until 1985. Fred (born 1960), Lauren (born 1962), Mitchell (born 1970), and Doug (born 1974) are his four children.

Career

In New York City, Clive Davis began practicing law after obtaining a law degree from Harvard Law School and joining Rosenman, Colin, Kaye, Petschek & Freund. In 1960, Davis was given the position of assistant counsel at Columbia Records. He had progressed to the position of general manager and administrative vice-president of Columbia Records by 1966. His appointment as president of Columbia Records happened in 1967.

During this period, Davis proposed a contract to the musician Donovan. Further signings included Janis Joplin, Santana, Bruce Springsteen, Chicago, Billy Joel, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, and The Grateful Dead. Davis departed CBS in 1974 because of a financial scandal.

Arista Nashville and Bad Boy Records were founded by him in 1988 and 1993 respectively. Davis left Arista in 2000 and founded J Records, an independent label. RCA Music Group’s President and CEO position was taken by Davis after BMG became the majority shareholder of J Records in 2002. Sony BMG became Sony BMG after merging with Sony Music Entertainment in 2004. Davis was appointed as the CEO of Sony Music Entertainment in 2008.
