February 5th, 1952 marks the birth date of Christine Baranski in Buffalo, New York, United States. Her parents, Virginia Baranski (1916-2002) and Lucien Baranski (1914-1960), were the editors of a Polish-language newspaper. Her older sibling, Michael J. Baranski (1949–1998), was an advertising executive who passed away at the age of 48.

Villa Maria Academy, located in Cheektowaga, Buffalo suburb, was the school of choice for Christine Baranski. Her acting prowess was noticed during her sophomore year of high school and was excelled and sharpened by the drama coach of the school, who was a retired opera singer from Austria. After graduating from high school, she moved to New York City and attended Juilliard School, which is renowned for its drama program. She obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Arts after graduating from the school in 1974.

Personal Life

On October 15, 1983, she got hitched to a successful actor and playwright, Mathew Cowels. Their bond was strong and they were given the blessing of two daughters named Isabel Cowels and Lily Cowles. Her daughter Isabel is a practicing attorney, attended law school, passed the New York bar exam, and was working for the Brooklyn district attorney But unfortunately, her husband Matthew died of congestive heart failure on 22nd of May 2014. During her Juilliard School days, Christine Baranski began her career as a full-time actress and debuted on Broadway in ‘Hide and Seek’ in 1980. During the same year, she landed her first Off-Broadway performance in ‘Coming Attractions’ at Playwrights Horizons. Since her debut performance in ‘Sally and Marsha’ in 1982, she has been a regular performer in Manhattan Theatre Club’s Off-Broadway productions. She won the 1984 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play when she appeared on Broadway in Tom Stoppard’s ‘The Real Thing’.

She has appeared on Broadway in ‘Hurlyburly’ (1984), ‘The House of Blue Leaves’ (1986), ‘Rumors’ (1989), and ‘Boeing Boeing’ (2008), among others. Her second Tony Award in 1989 was for her performance in ‘Rumors,’ which was nominated for Best Featured Actress in a Play. She won the 2003 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Mrs. Lovett in ‘Sweeney Todd’ in 2002 which was staged at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. In 2006, she portrayed the main character in ‘Mame’ that was presented at the same location.
