Early Life

Career
Dance career: 2013–2018
In New York City, McRae won the Mini Best Female Dancer award at the 2013 Dance Awards. After gaining some popularity through social media, she became a brand ambassador for the American dance shoe manufacturer, Capezio. She was a finalist at the 2014 National Gala of the New York City Dance Alliance. From 2013 to 2015, she provided the voice for Spot Splatter Splash in the Lalaloopsy franchise.
McRae won the silver medal as a soloist in 2015 and was granted a two-week scholarship at the Berlin State Ballet company. She won a bronze medal for her duet at the 2015 Youth America Grand Prix. She danced in the music video for Walk of the Earth’s platinum-certified single ‘Rule the World’. At the 2015 Dance Awards, McRae received the Best Female Dancer award again, this time for the Junior category.
She performed at Justin Bieber’s Purpose World Tour concert in Calgary in June 2016, where Bieber performed ‘Children’. She participated in the thirteenth season of the American television show So You Think You Can Dance in June 2016. While she was not an American citizen, Kathryn McCormick, an American dancer and actress, mentored her while she competed for the America’s Favorite Dancer title. In May 2017, she was featured in a pas de deux in the Alberta Ballet Company’s production, ‘Our Canada’, choreographed by Jean Grand-Maître. In November 2017, after performing a dance to Demi Lovato’s song “Tell Me You Love Me” she was invited by Lovato to rehearse with their dancers for their performance at the American Music Awards. For the third time she won Best Female Dancer at the 2018 Dance Awards in Las Vegas, this time in the Teen category, making her the first dancer in the competition’s history to win in all categories from mini to teen. She choreographed and performed in the music video for the song ‘Just Say When’ by Nothing More, an American rock band, in April 2018.
Music beginnings: 2017–2020
Since its creation in 2011, McRae’s YouTube channel has primarily featured dance videos. In 2017, she started a video series that showcased original songs she wrote and recorded in her bedroom. After releasing her first song as part of the series, ‘One Day’, which attracted over 40 million views, she decided to release it independently as her debut single. Her first certification would come with the song being certified gold in Canada. McRae’s continued uploading and release of independent singles from 2017 to 2019 led to her being named YouTube’s Artist on the Rise. Her singles attracted the attention of record labels. The single ‘Kids Are Alright’ was released by her in March 2019.
McRae’s April 2020 single, ‘You Broke Me First,’ was later adopted as the lead single from her upcoming second EP. I Used to Think I Could Fly: 2021–2022
In January 2021, McRae released the song ‘Rubberband’, which would later become the third single from her second EP. March 3, 2021 marked the release of McRae’s second EP, Too Young to Be Sad, on March 26, 2021, with a promotional single titled ‘Slower’. The EP debuted at number 94 on the US Billboard 200 after receiving positive reviews upon release.
