During his college years, Spielberg began to develop his passion for storytelling and visual storytelling.

Spielberg started directing his first short films when he was young. He earned a photography merit badge while a Boy Scout in 1958 for creating a 9-minute film called ‘The Last Gunfight’. When Spielberg was 13, he was awarded a prize for his film ‘Escape to Nowhere’, a 40-minute movie that was based on a battle in East Africa. While pursuing a career in the entertainment industry, he dropped out of California State University Long Beach in 1969.

In 1968, Spielberg worked as an intern at Universal Studios and produced his first film, ‘Amblin’, which was a 26-minute production. His career in television began in 1969 when he was hired to direct a segment for the pilot episode of ‘Night Gallery’, which featured Joan Crawford. He was able to impress Universal Studios with his initial full-length assignment, which was an episode of ‘The Name of the Game’ called ‘L.A.’ He was contracted by Universal in 2017 to direct four films.

His directorial debut, ‘Jaws’, which grossed over $470 million worldwide at the box office, was his first major success and brought him into mainstream cinema. Steven’s first Academy Award nomination for Best Director was for ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’, which he wrote and directed in 1977. In 2012, Spielberg released Lincoln, which was written by Tony Kushner. Based in part on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s study Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln (2006), the film chronicles the fraught politicking that preceded the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment, which formally abolished slavery, in the closing months of the Civil War. Spielberg’s film, directed by Daniel Day-Lewis, captures the president’s complicated psychology, with a mix of good humor and cynical despair. Although some critics pointed out that it took a few historical shortcuts and neglected to portray the role of abolitionists outside Congress, the film was successful in the box-office. 12 Oscar nominations were given to it, including best picture and director.

Spielberg was behind the movie ‘Bridge of Spies’ that was released in 2015. Tom Hanks plays the lead role in the film, which is based on the 1960 U-2 incident that took place during the Cold War. On October 16, 2015, the film was released and was given nominations for six Academy Awards.

Spielberg brought back historical events with The Post, a well-received drama about the release of the Pentagon Papers, a secret Department of Defense study regarding the Vietnam War. The papers were acquired by both The New York Times and The Washington Post in 1971, and the movie follows The Washington Post’s attempt to publish the information. The movie featured Hanks in the role of Ben Bradlee, the executive editor at The Washington Post, and Meryl Streep in the role of Katharine Graham, the owner of the paper.

Spielberg returned to sci-fi storytelling with Ready Player One (2018) after 13 years of absence. The film takes place in 2045, where people from a declining Earth find solace in the exciting virtual world of OASIS. Wade Watts, a teenager who loves the 1980s, is the protagonist of the game, where he competes with other users to find the treasure hidden by the simulation’s creator.

Spielberg received many honors aside from his Academy Awards. The Presidential Medal of Freedom was bestowed upon him in 2015. The HBO TV documentary ‘Spinal Tap’ (2017) focuses on the life and career of him.
