Biography
Quebec City, Quebec, Canada was where the birthplace of Pom Klementieff was on May 3rd, 1986. Alexis Klementieff, a French consul for the French government, was her father and she was born to a Korean mother. Eugene Klementieff, the painter from Russia, was her grandfather. The name ‘Pom’ was chosen by her parents due to its pronunciation similarity to both the Korean words for’spring’ and ‘tiger’. The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs in Canada hired Klementieff’s father to be their consul. Due to her father’s diplomat status, she was unable to obtain Canadian citizenship due to jus soli laws that do not apply to children of diplomats.

Career
At the age of 19, Klementieff enrolled at the Cours Florent drama school in Paris, where she refined her acting abilities. Her film debut was in the French independent film ‘Après lui’ (2007), and she then played a leading role in ‘Loup’ (2009). As the bodyguard Haeng-bok, she demonstrated her martial arts prowess in Spike Lee’s ‘Oldboy’ (2013) when she made her debut in Hollywood. Her casting as Mantis in the MCU was a result of this role being a significant turning point.
In the summer of 2014, she received a purple belt from practicing taekwondo while pursuing other Hollywood auditions after moving to Los Angeles. In 2015, she was given the opportunity to play a role in Hacker’s Game. She portrays a hacker in the movie in comparison to Lisbeth Salander from the novel The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. She was aided in the film by the fighting skills she had acquired.
Klementieff moved to Los Angeles, California after ‘Oldboy’ to start a career in the American entertainment industry. In 2017, she appeared as Mantis in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ after starring in the comedy-drama ‘Ingrid Goes West’ (2017) and the romance drama ‘Newness’.
While Mantis soon became a fan favourite, Steve Englehart, Mantis’s co-creator, felt that the cinematic depiction of the character has nothing to do with how she is characterized in the comics. Klementieff returned to her role in both “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) and “Avengers: Endgame” (2019). In the upcoming ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’, she will once again portray the character.
