He is best known for portraying John Gillman / Homelander in Amazon Prime Video’s superhero streaming television series The Boys and its spin-offs (2019–present), as well as the dual roles of Jethro and Van West in the series Outrageous Fortune (2005–10) and Lucas Hood in the Cinemax series Banshee (2013–16).

Starr was recognized with the AACTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, among other accolades, for his performance in Wish You Were Here, which was made in Australia in 2012. His performance in After the Waterfall (2010) led to him being nominated for the New Zealand Film Award for Best Actor.

After graduating from Rangitoto College in 1993, Starr began studying acting at Unitech and working at different odd jobs, including a petrol station, before deciding to pursue a full-time acting career.

Career

Antony Starr’s acting career began in 1995 when he appeared as a guest in the popular fantasy series Xena: Warrior Princess. The on-set experience and exposure to international production standards were valuable to him in this early role. Through his persistence and dedication to improving his craft, he achieved his breakthrough.

During the early years, Starr had to appear in a variety of guest roles on New Zealand television, including on ‘Shortland Street’ and ‘Mercy Peak’. He gained knowledge about various aspects of television production through each role and established connections in the industry.
