Early in her life, due to her father’s career in Air Force, the family lived in various cities including Biloxi, Mississippi, and Del Rio, Texas, before finally settling in Claremont, California.

When she was very young, she expressed her interest in acting. At 11 years old, she participated in an acting competition in Beverly Hills and emerged victorious. Starting her passion was made possible by the grand prize, which included free acting classes. She was signed by an agent nine months later. Claremont High School was where she attended and graduated from in 1997. She then went to the Atlantic Theatre Company.

Career

Alba was originally going to play a small role in the 1994 film Camp Nowhere, which featured Christopher Lloyd and Jonathan Jackson. One of the major roles was assigned to her after another actress dropped out. In 1994, Jessica Alba was cast in the well-known Nickelodeon show The Secret World of Alex Mack that also included Larisa Oleynik. Maya was played by Jessica Alba in the Flipper TV series for the first two series. Alba had already been certified as a scuba diver before being hired to the show.

Alba, who was born to a lifeguard mother, acquired swimming abilities before she even turned two. She used her swimming skills to play Maya in the show ‘Flipper’, where she was an avid swimmer and certified scuba diver. Her role in a second season was a result of the successful first season that started in 1995. The show remained part of Alba’s life until 1997.

The year 1998 saw her pick up guest roles in several prominent and highly rated television series including first season of the crime drama ‘Brooklyn South’ as Melissa Hauer, two episodes of ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ as Leanne and for an episode of ‘The Love Boat: The Next Wave’ as Layla. She had a busy year in her career in 1999. Concurrently, she made an appearance in the Randy Quaid comedy feature ‘P.U.N.K.S.’ Her film career began with the addition of important roles in the romantic comedy ‘Never Been Kissed’ and the comedy horror ‘Idle Hands’.

Though Jessica Alba did a lot of work, her breakthrough as an actress came in when she got selected from 1200 odd candidates who auditioned for the role of Max Guevara, a genetically engineered super soldier, for the Fox sci-fi television series ‘Dark Angel’ in 2000. Alba was highly acclaimed as an actress for two seasons until 2002. Besides receiving multiple awards, she also received a Golden Globe nomination.

She played a role in the horror film ‘The Eye’ in 2008. Despite the film’s lack of success, her performance was praised by critics. In the same year, she appeared in both ‘Meet Bill’ and ‘The Love Guru’. The actress had a busy year in 2010 due to her workload. In ‘The Killer Inside Me’, she played Joyce Lakeland, a prostitute, for five consecutive releases. Her next role was as Morley Clarkson in the popular romantic comedy ‘Valentine’s Day’, followed by the action film ‘Machete’. Little Fockers and ‘An Invisible Sign’ were two other releases made this year.

Alba collaborated with Robert Rodriguez for the third time in 2011 on Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, playing an retired spy who is summoned back to action. To establish a connection with her new stepchildren, she invites them to come with her. The film received a moderate success at the box office, earning US$85 million worldwide, but it was not as successful as the previous films in the franchise. The moderately successful animated film Escape from Planet Earth was Alba’s first voice acting debut in 2013.

Alba collaborated with director Rodriguez on two more films. She reprised her role of an Immigration Officer, in an uncredited cameo appearance, in Machete Kills (2013), which flopped with critics and audiences, and her much larger role of stripper Nancy Callahan, seeking to avenge her late protector, in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, which was released in August 2014, on 2D and 3D.

She next took on the roles of a cabaret show performer in the dramedy Dear Eleanor (2014), the athletic girlfriend of a successful and well-respected English professor in the romantic comedy Some Kind of Beautiful (2014), a receptionist at a limo company in the thriller Stretch (also 2014), an emotionally vulnerable weapons trafficker in the crime comedy Barely Lethal (2015), and that of a documentary filmmaker in the horror film The Veil (2016); all films were released for limited theatrical runs and VOD.
