Ron Livingston’s birth place was Cedar Rapids, Iowa on June 5, 1967, where he was born. Livingston is a member of the family that included Kurt Livingston, who is an aerospace electronics engineer, and Linda (née Rinas), a Lutheran pastor, who were born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He has two brothers and one sister. John, his younger brother, is also involved in the entertainment industry. WKBT-DT in La Crosse, Wisconsin was a TV news personality where Jennifer Livingston and Mike Thompson both worked.

Livingston began acting at Theatre Cedar Rapids as a youth when he was introduced to community theatre during a job shadowing. He pursued his higher education at Yale University, where he sang with the renowned a capella group, the Whiffenpoofs.
