He is the son of Francis Percy Scott, who served in the British Army, and Elizabeth Jean Scott is his mother. Ridley Scott has a brother named Frank Scott and a brother named Tony Scott, who became well-known film directors for Top Gun and Crimson Tide.

Much of his childhood was spent in London. Scott was unable to spend much time with his father during his early years because his father and elder brother were both in the military. Following World War II, the family relocated to London after spending time in Wales and Germany.

Education

After matriculating at West Hartlepool College in 1954, Scott graduated with a degree in design in 1958. He obtained a master’s degree in graphic design from the Royal College of Art in London between 1960 and 1962.

Scott’s first short film, Boy and Bicycle, was directed as part of his studies and was black and white, featuring both his younger brother and father. As a set design trainee at the BBC, he began his work in 1963. He had made a significant contribution to the production and direction of numerous television series and programs by the time he left the BBC.

Career

Working alongside Alan Parker, Ridley Scott established his own production company, Ridley Scott Associates, in 1968 to pursue his career in advertising. Approximately 2,000 commercials were directed by him in the next decade. In 1977, he debuted in a feature film called The Duellists, which featured Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel. At the Cannes Film Festival, the film was named the Jury Prize for Best First Feature.

The position of directing ‘Alien’ was accepted by Ridley in 1979. Ridley gained immense respect and appreciation due to the huge international success of the science-fiction horror film. He proceeded with 1492: Consquering Paradise (1992), White Squall (1996), and G.I. Before Gladiator (2000), Jane achieved great success with Jane (1997). The movie was awarded five Academy Awards and redefined the modern epic genre. In 2001, Black Hawk Down and Hannibal were both critically and commercially successful projects, which were both preceded by this success.

Ridley was nominated for an Academy Award again for the war film ‘Black Hawk Down’. The next film was ‘Matchstick Men,’ a low-budget movie that achieved moderate box office success. ‘Kingdom of Heaven’, his 2005 film, resulted in a lot of controversy.
