Manhattan, New York City welcomed Laura Leggett Linney into this world on February 5, 1964. Her family had a strong connection to the arts. Early exposure to theater was influenced by the work of Romulus Linney, her father, who was a prominent playwright. Miriam Anderson Leggett, who was a nurse, was the mother of her.
