She first gained recognition in the 1989 film Born on the Fourth of July before achieving widespread acclaim for her role as Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson in The Closer (2005–2012). In 2007, she won a Golden Globe for her performance and in 2010, she won an Emmy. Sedgwick’s film appearances include The Guardian (1990) and The Edge of Seventeen (2016). In addition to directing, producing, and writing, she has also expanded her career by directing episodes of The Closer and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
