Early Life
Joaquin Phoenix was a product of the Rio Piedras family, who were born on October 28, 1974, and were the children of John Lee Bottom and Arlyn Bottom. The Children of God missionary had an ardent following among his parents. There were four siblings in his family: River, Rain, Liberty, and Summer. Meyer Dunetz and Margit Lefkowitz, both Russian and Hungarian Jews, were his maternal grandparents. In the late 1960s, the Phoenix family joined a religious group called Children of God and worked as missionaries, traveling across South America before settling permanently in the United States in 1977.
