Early Life
The early life of Jackie Chan was characterized by hardship and determination, born on April 7, 1954, in Victoria Peak, British Hong Kong. Charles and Lee-Lee Chan, his parents, were forced to leave China due to the Chinese Civil War. Jackie, who grew up in a working-class neighborhood, was nicknamed ‘Pao-pao’ (Cannonball) because of his boundless energy. Chan’s childhood was enriched by the multicultural environment of his four siblings — Fang Shide, Yulan Chan, Fang Shisheng, and Guilan Chan.
At the age of six, Jackie Chan and his family traveled to Canberra, Australia, where his father secured a cook position at the American embassy. Despite her best efforts, fate had other plans for young Jackie. His parents made the decision to send him back to Hong Kong the following year to attend a strict boarding school that specializes in training students for traditional Chinese opera called Jingxi.
Education
Chan was admitted to the China Drama Academy at the age of six, a rigorous school that trains students in Peking opera. He spent a decade perfecting his skills in martial arts, acrobatics, and acting at this location. His future career was built on the foundation of his intense training and discipline at the academy. Chan attended the Chinese Opera Research Institute in Hong Kong this time to acquire training in music, dance, and traditional martial arts. Become a member of the Seven Little Fortunes performance group in that location.
Career
His film career began at the age of five when he appeared in small roles as a child actor. He appeared in Big and Little Wong Tin Bar (1962) with other ‘Little Fortunes’ when he was eight years old, and Li Li-Hua played his mother in the movie. The following year, the young actor appeared in extras of Yen Chun’s 1964 film Liang Shan Po and Chu Ying Tai and had a small role in King Hu’s 1966 film Come Drink with Me. After a brief appearance in another kung fu movie, A Touch of Zen, Chan was signed to Chu Mu’s Great Earth Film Company in 1971.
Chan appeared in the Bruce Lee film Fist of Fury (1972), both as an extra and as a stunt double for the Japanese villain Hiroshi Suzuki, particularly during the final fight scene where Lee kicks him and he flies through the air. In Enter the Dragon (1973), Chan made another appearance in a Bruce Lee movie as an undersized henchman who is killed by Lee’s character. Sammo Hung was instrumental in getting Chan minor roles in both Bruce Lee’s films. Chan was involved in the production of John Woo’s The Young Dragons (1974) as a martial arts choreographer.
Chan has usually been the director and screenwriter for his own films, starting with The Young Master in 1978. His best Hong Kong-produced films include the nonstop action-fests Project A (1983), Police Story (1985), Armour of God (1986), and the Golden Horse Award-winning Crime Story (1993) — not to mention the multiple sequels of each of the aforementioned titles.
His biggest domestic success at the box office occurred in 1987 when he acted and directed the movie ‘Armour of God’. According to reports, it earned approximately 35 million Hong Kong dollars. Following this, he produced ‘Miracles – Mr. Canton and Lady Rose’, which did well in the market. The success of these two movies led Chan to create a production company called ‘Golden Way’.
From 1988-1998, a huge number of offers started coming his way all the way from Hollywood, like: ‘Rumble in the Bronx’, ‘Police Story 2’, ‘Armour of God II: Operation Condor’, ‘Police Story 3: Super Cop’, ‘Drunken Master II’ and ‘Police Story 4: First Strike’. Chan was initially given the opportunity to play a villain in Hollywood movies, but he declined to take on typical roles or portray a stereotypical character. Sylvester Stallone offered him a role in the movie ‘Demolition Man’, but he declined it.
In 1998, Chan was the star of the Hollywood movie ‘Rush Hour’, which was a tremendous success at the box office. In the movie, he collaborated with the comedic actor Chris Tucker. He maintained his status as one of the biggest movie stars in the world throughout the next decades in a series of films that include Rush Hour 2, The Tuxedo, Shankghai Knights, The Myth, Rush Hour 3.
The movie ‘Mulan’ had Chan voicing the character ‘Shang’ and singing the original soundtrack. Between 2000 and 2005, he voiced the character in the cartoon ‘Jackie Chan Adventures’, which was inspired by him. In 2003, he collaborated with British comedian Lee Evans and Claire Forlani on the film ‘The Medallion’. The box office did not do well for this movie. He was involved in the production of ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ in 2004 and it was a success at the box office. In 2005, he released books such as ‘The Huadu Chronicles: Blade of the Rose’, ‘New Police Story’, ‘The Myth’, and ‘Robin-B-Hood’. Rush Hour 3, which Chan appeared in, earned more than 258 million US dollars in 2007.
Chan and Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith starred in the remade version of ‘The Karate Kid’ in 2011. The movie had a significant impact on the box office, generating over 358 million US dollars. In 2011, he released his 100th movie, ‘1911’. After releasing ‘Who Am I?’ in 1998, this is his first directorial venture.
He next starred in ‘CZ12,’ ‘Police Story 2013,’ ‘Dragon Blade,’ ‘Monkey King: Hero Is Back,’ ‘Kung Fu Panda 3,’ ‘Skiptrace,’ ‘Railroad Tigers,’ ‘Kung Fu Yoga,’ ‘The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature,’ and ‘The Lego Ninjago Movie.
