Biography
March 2, 1949 marked the birth of Cheryl Gates McFadden in Akron, Ohio. On her mother’s side, McFadden is a Lithuanian descendant. Silver Lake suburb was where she grew up and graduated from Old Trail High School in 1966. Her passion for theatre led her to Brandeis University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts. After moving to Paris, Gates enrolled in the renowned physical theatre school of actor Jacques Lecoq.
In the ’70s, McFadden provided instruction in dance and theatre at several prestigious colleges, including Havard University, George Washington University, and the University of Pittsburgh.
Career
McFadden became Dr. Beverly Crusher for the first time on ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ in 1987. She clashed with Maurice Hurley, the head writer, over her character’s portrayal and criticized the episode “Angel One” as sexist, leading to her contract not being renewed after the first season. After being replaced by Diana Muldaur as Dr. Katherine Pulaski, she only returned for the third season due to receiving support from fans and a call from Patrick Stewart.
The 1980 comedy ‘Taking Care of Business’ had McFadden and James Belushi as co-stars. Catherine Ryan was portrayed by her in ‘The Hunt for Red October’ in the same year. Gates played the lead role in the television show ‘Marker’ in 1995 and the film ‘Crowned and Dangerous’ in 1997. In 2006, she began appearing in Microsoft commercials and later took on the role of Allison Rourke in the sitcom ‘Mad About You’.
