Biography

Damian Lewis was born on February 11, 1971, in St. John’s Wood, London, England, to his parents, Charlotte Mary Lewis and J. Watcyn Lewis. His siblings include Gareth Lewis, who is a film director, William Lewis, and Amanda Lewis. He has a half-brother named Amanda Charlotte Russell and a half-sister named William Russell (Lord Mayor of the City of London).

Ashdown House School in Forest Row, East Sussex was his first independent school, followed by Eton College. In 1993, he completed his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Personal Life

Helen McCrory and Damian Lewis got hitched on July 4, 2007. Manon, their daughter, and Gulliver, their son, were born on September 8, 2006 and November 2, 2007, respectively. During the making of the NBC-TV crime drama Life, he moved to Los Angeles, California with his family after leaving England in the second half of 2007. In early 2009, they returned to England after finishing the final episode of the series. In Tufnell Park, north London, there is a Victorian townhouse where he lives.

Career

While in his teenage years, Damian Lewis chose to pursue acting as a career. Working as a telemarketer selling car alarms to meet both ends was a job he hated. During his RSC days, he played Borgheim in Adrian Noble’s production of Henrik Ibsen’s Little Eyolf, Posthumus in William Shakespeare’s Cymbeline and also appeared as Karsten Bernick in Pillars of the Community, another Ibsen play, at the National Theatre in November 2005.

In addition to his stage career, Damian Lewis also began his film career. In 1997, Robinson Crusoe was produced and starred Lewis as Patrick Conner. He played Laertes alongside Ralph Fiennes in a stage production of Hamlet that was helmed by Jonathan Kent. Lewis was chosen by Steven Spielberg to play Richard Winters in his World War II miniseries Band of Brothers, which premiered on HBO after witnessing the production.
