Early Life & Education
Born on December 3, 1948, in Aston, Birmingham, Ozzy Osbourne came from a working-class background. He was part of a family that included three older sisters and two younger brothers. His father’s career was as a toolmaker, whereas his mother took on the role of homemaker. Throughout his childhood, Ozzy encountered difficulties, such as dyslexia and bullying at school. In 1967, Osbourne joined forces with Geezer Butler to establish his inaugural band, Rare Breed. After just two performances, the band called it a day. Osbourne and Butler teamed up with guitarist Tony Iommi and drummer Bill Ward to establish a new band called Earth. In August 1969, the band renamed itself Black Sabbath and opted for a heavy blues genre infused with occult themes.
In the month of February 1970, the band ‘Black Sabbath’ released their first album. Critics found the album lacking, yet it achieved massive commercial success. Following their success with the first album, the band released ‘Paranoid’ in September 1970 shortly after. The album features ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Paranoid,’ alongside other songs, that became the band’s signature tracks.
The album ‘Master of Reality’, the band’s third release, was released in 1971 and hit the charts, topping the U.S. and U.K. lists. The band has never used acoustic songs before in their album, but this time they have. In 1972, the album ‘Black Sabbath Vol. 4′ was produced, featuring experiments with heavy sound. For this album, the band attempted a new, softer musical approach which garnered positive feedback from listeners.
In their fifth album titled ‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath’, which came out in 1973, the group expanded their musical ensemble by incorporating additional instruments into their orchestral configuration. Not only did this album sell impressive numbers, but it also garnered positive critiques from reviewers. Over the next few years, the group released ‘Sabotage’ in 1975, then ‘Technical Ecstasy’ in 1976, and finally ‘Never Say Die’ in 1978. By then, Osbourne had significant drug problems and was kicked out of the band in 1979.
In 1981, he commenced his solo career with his first album titled ‘Blizzard of Ozz’. The album achieved commercial success and was certified multi-platinum in the US. His second record, ‘Diary of a Madman,’ was published in the same year. In 1983, his album ‘Bark at the Moon’ was released, marking the first time he was credited with writing all the songs on his own. Gold certification was given to the album in the U.S.
His 1986 release was the album ‘The Ultimate Sin’, and the follow-up came out in 1988 as ‘No Rest for the Wicked’.
